It's officially summer, which means a lot of us are starting to plan for the new season and make key purchases for a warmer wardrobe.

Wondering where to begin? We've been decoding the spring/summer 2020 catwalks, and have unearthed 10 of the key trends that have been snapped up by buyers and are about to start flooding your Insta-feeds.

Below is your complete guide to the new season's enduring trends and the new-fangled fashions.

10. Chic Shorts

Cycling shorts may have stolen the show last year but next season things are looking a little looser. Tailored, micro, knee-length - skirts may be given a few months off as the shorts trend pedals harder into the new year. From the slouchy green Bermudas seen at Rejina Pyo to the tailored knee-length duchess satin numbers at Prada, the days of the slip skirt are getting shorter.

9. Clashing Prints

Fashion’s preoccupation with florals is inexhaustible but for 2020 it’s nearing saturation point: now, prints should be worn all-over, clashed merrily and madly with little concern for what goes with what. Versace and Dolce & Gabbana set the tone in Milan with pieces that mixed the puritanical with the proud, executed in retina-searing hues. Wallflowers need not apply.

8. Sequins

Have sequins ever not been on trend? Perhaps not, but they were prevalent at the runway shows that we can't ignore them. Offered up in endless incarnations, opt for a more gently beaded style - like Ashish's mint green jumpsuit above - for a friend's birthday lunch, before swapping into a blindingly glitzy Rixo number for dinner with the hubby.

7. Fringe

There’s nothing homespun about this trend, though: artisanal handiwork has gone high-end. From Jacqemus’ mini fringe bag, which boasts a healthy length of fringing, to the explosions of feather trims at Richard Quinn, No.21, 3x1, Valentino Garavani and Loewe, a fanciful impulse for frisson-pumped clothing is a non-mover this season.

6. Neons

Reflective of both the 1980s comeback and a growing interest in cyberpunk, every kind of highlighter-bright colour hit the runways across New York, Paris, Milan, and London for Spring/Summer 2020. Some designers used satins and lace, (think Balenciaga) while others kept things casual in cotton. The trend has already managed to make its way onto the streets, offering us inspiration for what can seem like a daunting palette to tackle.

5. Animal Print

Surprised to see leopard print all over again for spring 2020? It could be easy to sense that animal motifs have reached their peak this year, but according to the runways—and the statistics that go with them—fashion's best friend is still very much at your side. Animal print is still a spring/summer 2020 trend, going up in sales on the high street 50% since S/S 18, with leading brands such as Burberry, Gucci, and Calvin Klein leading the way.

4. Prairie Dresses

Yet another continuation from this summer, the prairie dress is about to become an even bigger deal for summer 2020. These long-sleeved, long-length, often floral or broderie anglaise styles are just the kind of "throw on" feminine dresses we've been craving for years.

3. Beige

Christen it with a fancy name – “contemporary oatmeal”, “stony ground” – if you desire, but the catwalks were clear on the colour of the season: be more beige. Riccardo Tisci redrew Burberry in 50 shades of classic-trench-coat colour, and the neutral remained a firm favourite at Emilia Wickstead. Head-to-toe is how the internationally sleek will be wearing it come spring.

2. Blush

Fashion is thinking pink at the moment with designers from New York to Paris showcasing their Spring/Summer 2020 collections. Dior powdered the runway in subtle pink for the season with Marc Jacobs and Prada following suit. On the runway, baby pink veils, glitter pink tights, neon pink padded blazers, and millennial pink dresses dominated. No matter how or where the colour is worn, pink will always be a statement.

1. Sage Green

After much debate around its official name (pea green? mint? pistachio?), we've picked shades of sage as the coming season's key colour to experiment with. It's already finding its footing on social media with #greenaesthetic trending on Pinterest, and with pastels now firmly in the S/S lexicon on a regular basis, this is the precise spectrum of mints that will jettison any old look into the new for 2020.
