Downton Abbey took the world by storm when it debuted on ITV in 2010; gaining popularity throughout its six-season run until the season finale in March, 2015.
The period drama so popular that it was known by its first name only captivated viewers with the well-heeled Crawleys, their servants and the goings-on at Downton (shot on location at the stately Highclere Castle in Hampshire).
While rumours were rife of a potential movie adaptation in the works, earlier this year it was finally confirmed that Downton Abbey fans may delight in the news that a film has been confirmed. Below is all you need to know about the exciting new movie.
Fans will we be happy to learn of a near-full original cast returning to the silver screen adaptation. The glittering cast will include the Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern as the Earl and Countess of Grantham. Michelle Dockery is set to return as Lady Mary, Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith and Penelope Wilton as Isobel Crawley.
Returning as the house help is Jim Carter as Charles Carson, Phyllis Logan as Mrs Hughes, Brendan Coyle and Joanne Froggatt as John and Anna Bates, and Robert James-Collier as Thomas Barrow.
Production has now wrapped and the release date has been confirmed as September 13 for the UK. “Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski.
“We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen.”
